ON THE VERY SPOT-1066 EXHIBTION
BATTLE ABBEY, HASTINGS

With Leigh Cain Creative, studio HB won the graphic design for a temporary exhibition for English Heritage to create a new 1066 display inside the gatehouse at Battle Abbey. The exhibition recounts the course of the battle, including the tradition –William’s men spent the eve of battle praying and attending mass, while Harold’s, spent the night getting drunk. The spaces were split in two-the night before (blue) and the battle the next day (orange). Using strong bold graphic panels to navigate the space, interactives and touch objects were weaved into the themed narrative. Large sections of the Bayeau tapestry were graphically enlarged and hung against the stone walls to add colour, texture and context. A shield wall was recreated and a 3d contour map that clearly ‘marked the spot’ where the battle occurred. There was further interpretation on the gatehouse rooftop, allowing visitors the best view of the landscape of 1066.
